[...] The reason I want to highlight this is to make sure we remain open to bringing new members in to our community. If we accepted the assumption that governments are inept and are best avoided, then we’d be missing out on bringing in a new partner to help us with our community’s goals. I believe that governments, at their best, can make enormous changes for the better in people’s lives. Certainly governments don’t always play a positive role, but we’re less likely to have negative outcomes if a bunch of enthustiastic people who believe strongly in something get engaged in the process.
Camilo,

the question is not whether new blood is needed. It is, as demonstrated by the retirement statistics. The question is whether that new blood will be good or bad. I'm proposing that unless we want it to be bad, good people should stop poo-pooing government service.

I work with some of those government employees you speak about, and agree with your characterization. Many want to improve their government as well. Let's find a way to work with the EXISTING federal workforce towards the common goal -- let's not make the assumption that the only way to change the culture is to replace it with new blood.
